BDSM Litmus Test

I’m not a fan of One True Way™ thinking, and while I value the use of labels and terminology as a way of expressing a concept quickly, I start to worry when I see someone trying to assert a definition that is one size fits all. Today Beth found a site that was trying to identify topping vs. bottoming vs. being dominant or submissive, and I found a subtle nuance: they were trying to come up with a definition that was one size fits always instead of all. Naturally I thought of several exceptions, starting with the obvious: people who identify as switches.

I mentally made a prediction that this site would have a problem with their own definition. Sure enough, a few sentences later Beth read aloud: “some people in the BDSM lifestyle disparage those who identify this way as not being…”

And that’s when it hit me: there is a litmus test for kink. It just isn’t BDSM unless some people in the BDSM community are taking a dump on it.

This thought made me laugh so hard I restarted my blog. 😀
